4'-methyl[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-carbaldehyde is an aromatic hydrocarbon that can be used as a photo-sensitizer in solar cells. It is able to absorb light and transfer the energy to an electron donor, such as biphenyl or alkoxybenzenes. This reaction produces an excited state of the aromatic hydrocarbon that reacts with chloride ions to produce acridinium ion and tetrahydrofuran. The tetrahydrofuran then reacts with mesitylene or oxidant to produce the desired product, which is aldehyde.
