Methoxymethyl phenyl sulfide (MMPS) is a molecule that has shown to have neurodegenerative properties. It is an aromatic hydrocarbon with a hydroxyl group and a methoxymethyl group. MMPS is synthesized by the oxidation of styrene, which gives it its name. The hydroxyl group in MMPS reacts with uv irradiation, leading to the formation of sulfoxide groups. These reactions are catalyzed by cationic polymerization, which leads to the formation of polymers that are expressed in Rhodobacter sphaeroides.
