4,4'-Methylenebis(2,6-di-tert-butylphenol) is an aliphatic hydrocarbon that has a viscosity of about 4,000 cP at 25 °C. This compound is used in biodiesel production as a viscosity and flow improver. It is also used to prevent corrosion of steel pipes and fittings by inhibiting the oxidation of metal ions. 4,4'-Methylenebis(2,6-di-tert-butylphenol) can be synthesized from monocarboxylic acids and phenols by the addition of a catalyst such as zinc dust. The reaction requires heat and time to proceed.
