3,4-Methylenedioxy-β-nitrostyrene is a drug that is used in the treatment of infectious diseases. It is resistant to metabolic degradation and has been shown to have an effect on transcriptional regulation. 3,4-Methylenedioxy-β-nitrostyrene was also shown to induce neuronal death in a whole-cell recording experiment. The mechanism of action for this compound involves the binding of hydroxyl ions to metal hydroxides, which leads to polymerase chain reaction inhibition and cell death. 3,4-Methylenedioxy-β-nitrostyrene also has electrochemical impedance spectroscopy properties and can be detected by plasma mass spectrometry.
