2-(4-Methylbenzoyl)benzoic acid is an activated compound that is used as a pharmaceutical intermediate. It has two asymmetric carbon atoms, which means that there are four isomers. 2-(4-Methylbenzoyl)benzoic acid has been shown to inhibit the production of inflammatory mediators. This may be due to its ability to inhibit cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase activities, which are enzymes that produce prostaglandins and leukotrienes respectively. These compounds have been implicated in the development and progression of inflammatory diseases such as asthma and arthritis. The mechanism of action for this drug is not known.
