9-Mesityl-10-methylacridinium tetrafluoroborate is an amine that reacts with an alkyne in the presence of light to form a 1,4-addition product. This reaction is catalyzed by a chiral ion pair, which has been shown to be effective in the synthesis of secondary and tertiary alcohols from terminal alkynes. The reaction can also be used for the synthesis of substituted 1,2-dienes from terminal alkynes and aldehydes. 9-Mesityl-10-methylacridinium tetrafluoroborate is effective in aerobic conditions, giving high yields of the desired products. This synthetic method has been used in the production of fluorescent light emitting diodes (LEDs) and organic solar cells.
