2-(2-Nitrovinyl)furan (2NIF) is a nitro compound that has been shown to be cytotoxic to PC3 cells and activate the enzyme phosphatase, which is involved in several cellular processes. 2NIF has been shown to inhibit the production of malondialdehyde and lipid hydroperoxides, which are byproducts of lipid peroxidation. 2NIF also has anticancer activity, as it inhibits cell proliferation and induces apoptosis in MCF-7 cells. It is able to bind to DNA and inhibit protein synthesis by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division.
