1-(4-Nitrophenyl)pyrrolidin-2-one is a nitro compound that is used in the synthesis of anilines. It is made by the reaction of 4-nitrophenol and 2-chloroacetamide with sodium nitrite, followed by acid hydrolysis. The nitro group on the pyrrolidine ring can be converted to a butanamide or other nitro compounds using salt formation or other reactions. The spectra of this compound are characterized by bands at wave numbers 335, 752, and 857 cm−1. The intramolecular nature of this molecule can be seen from its skeleton and heteroaromatic groups. 1-(4-Nitrophenyl)pyrrolidin-2-one has kinetic constants, ionization potentials, and constants that are similar to those for the parent molecule pyrrolidine. Nitro compounds such as this one react quickly with electron acceptors
