2-Nitrothiophene-4-carboxylic acid is a nitro compound that is used as a chemotherapeutic agent. It has been shown to have affinity for DNA and inhibits the synthesis of nucleic acids, which leads to cell death. This drug is also mutagenic in kinetic assays. The acetylation of 2-nitrothiophene-4-carboxylic acid yields an N-acetyl derivative, which can be hydrolyzed by hydroxylamine to yield a methyl ester. Nitrothiophene-4-carboxylic acid has been shown to be mediated by nitro groups, with substituent effects on the enzyme activity and thermodynamic parameters.
