Niclosamide is a piperazine-type anthelmintic drug used to treat hepatic steatosis. It has been shown to improve insulin resistance and mitochondrial membrane potential, which may be due to its ability to uncouple oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria. Niclosamide also has low oral bioavailability and is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. This drug is repurposed for treating hyperlipidemia and metabolic syndrome with good safety profile. Reaction time of niclosamide is fast, with an apical half-life of 4 hours.
