2-(3-Nitrobenzylidene)acetoacetic acid methylester is a cinnamyl ester. It is prepared by reacting piperazine with cinnamyl alcohol in the presence of calcium ion. The reaction generates a mixture of 2-(3-nitrobenzylidene)acetoacetic acid and 1,2-dichloroethane. Impurities are removed by recrystallization in an organic solvent and then purified by vacuum distillation. This product has been shown to have channel antagonist activity, which may be due to its inhibition of voltage-gated potassium channels.
