4-Nitro-1-oxy-pyridin-2-ylamine is a diazonium salt that is used in the synthesis of n-oxides. This compound is prepared by oxidation of 2-amino-4-fluoropyridine with nitric acid and acylation with formic acid in the presence of an excess of pyridine. The yield of this reaction is low, so it can be improved by using fluorine as a reducing agent. Reduction can also be achieved with fluoroborate or fluorine atoms. 4NOOPY has been converted to 2,4,6,8,10,12,14 and 16NOOPY by various methods involving diaminopyridine or reagents such as methanol, ethanol and propanol.
