3-(2-Nitrophenyl)propanoic acid is a reagent that is used in the production of indoline-2-carboxylic acid. This chemical compound has been used as a cyclizing agent to produce anhydrides and amides from carboxylic acids. 3-(2-Nitrophenyl)propanoic acid reacts with chlorine at temperatures below 200 °C to form chlorinated products, such as chloropropanols. The nitro group on the compound can be oxidized by hydroxyl groups to form nitro groups. 3-(2-Nitrophenyl)propanoic acid can be used in the production of indoline-2-carboxylic acid by reacting with chlorinating agents, such as chlorine or hydrogen chloride gas, to form an intermediate product called 2,4,5-trichloroindoline.
