Dimethylformamide sulfur trioxide complex (DMFSO) is a chemical compound that is used as an antimicrobial agent. DMFSO has been shown to be effective in treating inflammatory bowel disease. It also enhances the activity of β-lactamase, which is an enzyme that breaks down antibiotics. DMFSO can be used in pharmaceutical preparations such as tablets and capsules, or as a solvent for other drugs. DMFSO inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the disulfate groups on the chondroitin sulfate molecule, which are often found on the cell membrane of bacteria. This prevents the formation of new bacterial cells and causes cell lysis.
