Norfloxacin is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that inhibits the production of prostaglandins. Norfloxacin has been shown to inhibit population growth in E. coli, and this inhibition may be due to its ability to inhibit enzymatic inactivation. Norfloxacin-d5 is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that binds to bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA and inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. It has been used as a matrix effect indicator for wastewater treatment plants, with high concentrations of norfloxacin-d5 being indicative of poor wastewater treatment. The analytical method used for detecting norfloxacin-d5 was found to be sensitive enough to detect concentrations as low as 10 parts per trillion (ppt).
