Neomycin is an antibiotic that is used to treat infectious diseases, including respiratory tract infections. It has been shown to have a low potency in humans, with a half-life of 10 hours. Neomycin inhibits the synthesis of peptide hormones and decreases the production of prostaglandins by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes. Neomycin also exhibits antiinflammatory activity. The main mechanism of action for neomycin is its ability to inhibit protein synthesis by binding to ribosomes.
Neomycin can be used as an alternative treatment for urinary tract infections caused by resistant mutants or water vapor because it binds to bacteria's cell wall and prevents the formation of bacterial spores.
