1-(1-Naphthyl)-2-chloroethane is an industrial chemical that is used in the synthesis of medicines. It can be obtained by hydrolysis of the ester hydrochloride, which is a chiral compound. The synthesis of 1-(1-naphthyl)-2-chloroethane starts with the reaction of phenol and acetylene in the presence of an alkaline catalyst. This reaction takes place at a temperature of 160°C for three hours to produce methyl ester hydrochloride, which can then be reacted with sodium hydroxide to yield 1-(1-naphthyl)-2-chloroethane.
