Nilvadipine is a calcium channel blocker that inhibits voltage-dependent calcium channels and prevents the influx of calcium ions into the cell. It has been shown to reduce blood pressure in humans, but its mechanism of action is not well understood. Nilvadipine has been shown to inhibit neuronal death in rats when given chronically. It also blocks benzalkonium chloride-induced neurotoxicity in vitro, suggesting that it may be a potential treatment for Alzheimer's disease. In vivo studies of nilvadipine have shown that it reduces heart rate and increases the time between heart beats in humans with congestive heart failure. Structural analysis of nilvadipine has revealed an unusual structural feature: two hydrophobic regions on opposite sides of the molecule that are thought to interact with beta-1 adrenergic receptors on the surface of cells.
