NO-aspirin 1 is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that has been shown to have anti-cancer and anti-ulcerative effects. It inhibits the activity of cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, which are responsible for generating prostaglandins. In vivo studies using a balloon injury model have shown that this drug can inhibit tumor growth by reducing cell proliferation and increasing apoptosis in skin cancer cells, as well as reduce bowel inflammation. NO-aspirin 1 also has been shown to inhibit the mitochondrial membrane potential in cardiomyocytes, resulting in an increased incidence of myocardial infarcts. This drug binds covalently to COX enzymes, inhibiting their function.
