28-Nor brassinolide is a plant hormone that regulates growth and development. It has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of mammalian cells by binding to the hydroxyl group on the side chain of a cysteine residue in the enzyme, soluble epoxide hydrolase. This binding prevents the conversion of epoxides into diols, which are required for cell division. 28-Nor brassinolide also binds to photosynthetic pigments and induces hyperproliferation in plants by stimulating the production of chlorophyll and carotenoids. The physiological activities of 28-nor brassinolide have been studied extensively in prostate cancer cells, where it inhibits cancer growth and stimulates death in these cells by binding to polyclonal antibodies that are specific for prostate cancer cells.
