4-(4-Nitrophenylazo)-1-naphthol is a molecule that has been shown to have a cancerous effect on animal tissues. It is activated by light and causes the destruction of the nuclei of cells in animal tissue, which can lead to death. 4-(4-Nitrophenylazo)-1-naphthol interacts with the magnesium ion found in human tissues, forming a hydrogen bond. This interaction activates it and leads to cell death. 4-(4-Nitrophenylazo)-1-naphthol also has an effect on cellulose derivatives and polyethylene glycols, but is unaffected by aluminium ions or radiation. The chemical properties of 4-(4-Nitrophenylazo)-1-naphthol are due to its ability to form hydrogen bonds with water molecules, leading to dehydration and acid catalysis.
