- 2-Cyano-5-nitrothiophene
5-Nitrothiophene-2-carbonitrile is a potent fungicide and has been shown to be highly effective against the fungus Candida albicans. 5-Nitrothiophene-2-carbonitrile inhibits the growth of fungi by binding to the cell membrane and inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes. This chemical compound also exhibits antifungal activity in vitro, with a fungicidal concentration of only 0.01 mg/mL.
5-Nitrothiophene-2-carbonitrile has been shown to inhibit Candida albicans on agar plates and in vitro. In addition, this agent exhibits strong antibacterial activity against Gram positive bacteria such as Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus, but does not inhibit Gram negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli or Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
