The molecule reacts with chloride ions in an aqueous solution to form esters and chlorides, which are soluble in organic solvents. 3-(3-Nitrophenyl)propanoic acid, when dissolved in an organic solvent, can be used as a viscosity-increasing agent. This compound has been shown to have chemotactic effects on neutrophils and macrophages, which may be due to its ability to induce growth factor production by these cells. 3-(3-Nitrophenyl)propanoic acid also inhibits coronary heart disease by reducing the concentration of blood cholesterol and triglycerides.
