- Benzoic Acid, 4-Hydroxy-3,5-Bis(3-Methyl-2-Buten-1-Yl)-
Nervogenic acid is an antioxidant found in the plant genus, Rheum. It is a mixture of two dihydroxybenzoic acids that has been shown to have inhibitory activities against free radicals and reactive oxygen species. Nervogenic acid also has antioxidative activity and can be used for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. Nervogenic acid can be synthesized from p-hydroxybenzoic acid, which is available commercially as a chemical reagent. The chemical reactions involved in the synthesis are similar to those used in the preparation of o-hydroxyphenylacetic acid. The nmr spectroscopic data indicates that nervogenic acid contains ester linkages and has an acidic pH value at 3.5. The nmr spectra reveal that nervogenic acid contains bioactive molecules with one or more hydroxyl groups, such as phenols and polyphenols.
