2-Nitrophenethylamine is a prodrug that is metabolized to 2-nitrophenol after oral administration. This compound has been studied for its potential therapeutic use in conditions such as cancer, diabetes, and hypertension. 2-Nitrophenethylamine is a benzyl amine with two functional groups, the carboxymethoxy and the azide. The carboxymethoxy group is used for the staudinger reduction of azides to form secondary amines, which are subsequently reduced by hydrogenation to yield 2-nitrophenol. The azide group can be used as an electrophile in the synthesis of heterocycles. The pharmacokinetics of this drug have been studied in rats and dogs; it has shown low bioavailability when administered orally but high bioavailability following intravenous injection.
