5-Nitroisatin is a compound that inhibits the mitochondrial membrane potential and induces apoptosis by activating caspase-3. This compound has antimicrobial activity against gram-positive bacteria and is used to treat autoimmune diseases. 5-Nitroisatin has been shown to inhibit prostate cancer cells in tissue culture, where it causes cell death by inhibiting protein synthesis, which leads to inhibition of tumor growth. 5-Nitroisatin also has anti-inflammatory properties and can be used for treating osteoarthritis. The mechanism of action may be due to its inhibitory effect on transfer reactions, which are involved in the release of proton pumps from the mitochondria. It also inhibits prostaglandin synthesis, leading to an anti-inflammatory effect.
