1,4,5,8-Naphthalenetetracarboxdiimide is a tetracarboxylic acid that is found in several organic compounds. It has been shown to be a good ligand for the formation of stacked complexes with molecules containing metal ions. In the absence of other ligands, 1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxdiimide forms oligomers and tetramers. The structural analysis of these oligomers and tetramers shows that they are composed of alternating stacks of two or four molecules of 1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxdiimide. The stacking minimizes steric interactions between the molecules and simplifies the overall structure. This stacking also leads to minimal conformational changes within each molecule as it moves from one layer to another in the stack.
