Nonyl 4-hydroxybenzoate is a metabolite of nonylphenol, which is a synthetic chemical used in the production of detergents and other industrial chemicals. Nonyl 4-hydroxybenzoate has been shown to have antiviral properties against herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2, as well as human immunodeficiency virus type 1. It also has anti-inflammatory effects on eosinophils, which are cells that play an important role in allergic reactions and immune responses. Nonyl 4-hydroxybenzoate has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in rats by acting on specific receptors for oestrogen in the liver. This compound also inhibits inflammation and autoimmune diseases by inhibiting the enzyme sulphatase.
