1-(4-Nitrophenyl)-4-piperidinol is a hydroxy group with a piperidinol, nitro group, and ring system. This molecule has a nitrogen atom in the nitrophenyl ring that can be substituted with an electron-donating group such as a hydroxy or amino group. This molecule is capable of stacking due to the presence of four coplanar rings. The two rings on either side of the nitrophenyl ring are conformationally locked in place by hydrogen bonding. The optical rotation of this molecule is +30° and its hydrogen bonding groups are present on both sides of the molecule. The hydroxyl group is chromophoric and bonds to the nitro group through hydrogen bonding.
