2-Nitro-3-chlorotoluene (2NCT) is a byproduct of the industrial synthesis of formamide. It is a gaseous diazonium compound that can be synthesized from benzene and nitric acid. 2NCT undergoes diazotization with sodium nitrite in the presence of ammonia to produce the corresponding diazoaminobenzene, which then reacts with potassium carbonate to give an azobenzene. The azobenzene can be converted into nitrotoluenes using phosphoric acid. The low yield of this reaction limits its industrial application. 2NCT react with nucleophiles (e.g., chloride ion) to produce a nitrophenyl derivative and gas phase products (e.g., chloroform).
