2-Naphthyl 2-diazo-3,3,3-trifluoropropionate is a hydrophobic chemical that is used as a fluorescent probe to study the structure of membranes and virus capsids. It binds specifically to c1-6 alkyl chains in the membrane bilayer and forms a long-lived fluorescent product. This compound is labeled with 2-(dialkylamino)naphthalene, which has been shown to be an effective antiviral agent. 2-Naphthyl 2-diazo-3,3,3-trifluoropropionate can also be used for the detection of hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA in cells and tissues. The compound is active against HCV at concentrations much lower than those required for other nucleic acid probes. This drug has been found to bind more tightly than docetaxel (another anticancer drug) to the cancer cells resistant to this
