5-Oxothiomorpholine-3-carboxylic acid is a fluorescent compound that is structurally related to tryptophan. It has been shown to have an absorption maximum of 290 nm and a fluorescence excitation maximum of 295 nm. The light exposure time has been shown to have an effect on the fluorescence intensity of 5-oxothiomorpholine-3-carboxylic acid. 5-Oxothiomorpholine-3-carboxylic acid is often used in fingerprinting experiments, as it can be detected by mass spectrometry. This compound has also been found in impure samples of carbocysteine and other compounds that contain this residue. Acetonitrile and nucleophilic reagents are commonly used in the synthesis of 5-oxothiomorpholine-3-carboxylic acid.
