3-Oxo-2,3-dihydrobenzo[b]thiophene1,1-dioxide is an antifungal drug that has been shown to have a broad spectrum of activity against both bacteria and fungi. It inhibits the synthesis of cell wall components by binding to the enzyme enoyl reductase in the cytoplasmic membrane of fungi. This binding prevents the reduction of 3-oxohexanoyl coenzyme A and blocks fatty acid synthesis. The methylene group on this molecule is able to act as an electron acceptor, which increases its polarizability and therefore its dipole moment. This increased dipole moment enhances the antibacterial activity of 3-Oxo-2,3-dihydrobenzo[b]thiophene1,1-dioxide.
