Octenidine is a disinfectant that inhibits bacterial growth by inactivating the enzymes essential for cell growth. It has antibacterial efficacy against c. glabrata, and significant cytotoxicity against wild-type strains of human dihydrochloride epidermal cells. This product also has strong activity against antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Octenidine is water soluble and can be used as a preservative in cosmetics and food products. The octenidine molecule is an organic compound with the chemical formula CHClN. It is a colorless crystalline solid which is soluble in water, alcohols, and ethers. Octenidine dihydrochloride (ODH) is the salt of octenidine with hydrochloric acid or hydrogen chloride gas.
