3-Oxopropanoic acid is a semialdehyde that is an inhibitory agent for the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and has been shown to have inhibitory properties on malonic acid, coumarin derivatives, and enzyme activities. 3-Oxopropanoic acid has been shown to inhibit the formation of polyketides in the metabolic pathway. It also inhibits the activity of enzymes such as acetyl-CoA carboxylase, pyruvate decarboxylase, and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase. 3-Oxopropanoic acid has been shown to be active against E coli K-12 with a pKa of 4.5. The molecule reacts with hydroxyl groups and can be traced by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry or nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
