1,2,2,6,6-Pentamethylpiperidine is a neurotoxin that has been shown to have a high affinity for the receptor site of epidermal growth factor (EGF). It also inhibits polymerase chain reaction and protein synthesis. The enzyme pempidine synthetase is inactivated by 1,2,2,6,6-pentamethylpiperidine. This inhibition leads to an accumulation of adenosine 3',5'-cyclic phosphate and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels in the brain. High values of these chemicals are associated with increased systolic pressure. 1,2,2,6,6-Pentamethylpiperidine is metabolized by hydrogen tartrate to produce two types of amines: acetylcholine and dopamine. These amines are used as neurotransmitters in the central nervous system.
