Phloretin is a natural compound and a member of the class of flavonoids. It has shown hypoglycemic effects in diabetic animals, with no adverse effects on serum glucose levels. Phloretin also has antioxidative properties, which may be due to its ability to prevent reactive oxygen species (ROS) from damaging cellular components. Phloretin also has an apoptosis-inducing effect in cells by inhibiting GSH-Px activities and inducing structural changes in the mitochondria. These structural changes lead to increased permeability of the mitochondrial membrane and release of cytochrome c, which then initiates the apoptotic pathway. This compound also interacts with dextran sulfate, a model system for glycosaminoglycans and glycoproteins that are important for cell growth and differentiation.
