Panaxadiol is a natural product that has been shown to be useful for the treatment of diabetes and inflammation. Panaxadiol can act as a receptor agonist or antagonist, depending on the type of tissue it binds with. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis. The mechanism of action is not yet clear, but it may involve signal pathways involving protein kinase C and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase. It has been shown to have a matrix effect in cells, which may be responsible for its hypoglycemic effects. Panaxadiol has been shown to have an x-ray diffraction pattern similar to that of ginsenoside Rg3. This similarity suggests that panaxadiol is metabolized into ginsenoside Rg3 in vivo, which is known as an insulin sensitizer and anti-diabetic agent.
