Descrição:3-Hydroxy-4-phenylbutyrate (H-D-Phe-Ala) is a fatty acid that is metabolized by the liver. It has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of the enzyme 3-hydroxyacyl coenzyme A dehydrogenase, which catalyzes the first step in fatty acid metabolism. H-D-Phe-Ala also inhibits the production of hormones such as insulin and glucagon and may be used to treat diabetes. This compound may also be useful for preventing or treating liver disease caused by alcohol abuse or other causes, due to its ability to inhibit enzymes that break down proteins in the cell. The addition of H-D-Phe-Ala has been shown to prevent formation of toxic metabolites in rats given an experimental drug, phenacetin, which can lead to kidney damage.
