2-Propoxybenzaldehyde is an organic chemical that is used in drug development as an antimicrobial. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by binding to the formaldehyde or hydrazone groups, which are found in proteins and nucleic acids. 2-Propoxybenzaldehyde has been shown to be effective against a number of microorganisms, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and resistant strains of Escherichia coli. This compound also inhibits the activation of melanin and can be used to treat skin cancer. The antimicrobial activity of 2-propoxybenzaldehyde may be due to its ability to activate amines and inhibit the production of melanin by binding with methylamine groups on tyrosinase.
