Phenanthrene-4-carbaldehyde is a formyl derivative of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon phenanthrene. It is a colourless liquid with an evaporation point at 20°C and a boiling point of 170°C. The compound has been shown to undergo photocyclization and photooxidation when irradiated with ultraviolet light, which are reactions that involve the formation of oxygenated products. Phenanthrene-4-carbaldehyde has also been shown to be oxidised by chloride ions in the presence of oxygen, producing chloride oxide and carbon dioxide. This molecule has been optimised for use in aerosols and mass spectrometry experiments.
