1-Phenyl-1H-pyrazole-5-carbaldehyde (1PP) is a pyrazolyl compound that undergoes 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition to form imines. This reaction can be catalyzed by light or heat, and the tautomerization of this imine to an azomethine intermediate can be observed in experiments. The regiochemistry of the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition is dependent on the orientation of the dipolarophile with respect to the pyrazolyl ring. It was found that 1PP reacts with aldehydes and ketones to form unsymmetrical pyrazoles in yields up to 99%.
