2-Pyrrolidinone is an organic compound with the chemical formula C5H8O2. It is a colorless liquid with a pungent smell, soluble in water and polar organic solvents. 2-Pyrrolidinone can be synthesized by nitration of phenol or by boron trifluoride etherate-activated synthesis. The asymmetric synthesis of 2-pyrrolidinone has been achieved by photoelectrochemical oxidation of 4-(1H-pyrrol-1-yl)benzaldehyde (1) in ethanol solution at -20°C, followed by reaction of the resulting amine with methyl iodide to give 2-(1H-pyrrol-1-yl)phenyl]amine (2).
2-[(1H-Pyrrol-1-yl)phenylamino]benzaldehyde (3) was obtained from the photolysis of 3
