Phenyl 3-hydroxy-2-naphthoate is an organic compound that is used in the synthesis of a variety of organic compounds. It can be prepared by the diazotization of aniline, followed by coupling with hydroxynaphthoic acid. The reaction is conducted in the presence of a base, such as sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate. This process yields phenyl 3-hydroxy-2-naphthoate and sodium salt of hydroxy naphthoic acid. Phenyl 3-hydroxy-2-naphthoate is soluble in strong mineral acids, but not in water. It is also insoluble in most organic solvents, but dissolves well in ethers and chlorinated hydrocarbons.
