2-Phenylalanine is a potent, competitive pressor agent that acts by increasing the concentration of calcium in the microvessels. It is also a potent antagonist of α2-adrenergic receptors and has been shown to be effective against HIV infection. 2-Phenylalanine can be synthesized using solid-phase synthesis techniques and analogs have been developed for use as potential antihypertensives. The drug's primary mechanism of action is to increase the concentration of calcium ions in vascular smooth muscle cells, which leads to vasoconstriction and an increase in blood pressure. 2-Phenylalanine can be identified by analytical methods such as HPLC, GC, or IR spectroscopy.
