2-Phenyl-1,2-propanediol is an organic solvent that is used in the production of propionate. It is hydrolyzed by lipase to produce 2-phenylethanol and hexanoic acid. 2-Phenyl-1,2-propanediol has been shown to be a substrate for porcine pancreatic lipase and primary alcohols. Lipase catalyzes the conversion of 2-phenyl-1,2-propanediol to acetic acid and phenylethyl alcohol. The reaction time for this chemical can be decreased by adding an activator such as hexanoic anhydride or propionic acid. The activation energy for this reaction is approximately 18 kcal/mol.
