Phytosphingosine hydrochloride is a chiral compound that can be derived from the natural product sphingolipid. It has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against various bacterial strains, including Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis. Phytosphingosine hydrochloride is resistant to acid formation and can be activated by microbial enzymes in order to inhibit the production of fatty acids. It also inhibits the cell signaling pathways, leading to an increase in amines. This compound has also been shown to have antioxidant and vitamin E-like activities as well as epidermal growth factor-like effects on cells.
