2,4-Pyrimidinediamine, 6-ethyl is a molecule that has been shown to have antimalarial activity in experimental studies. It is a selective inhibitor of the parasite Plasmodium falciparum. This drug inhibits the synthesis of pyrimethamine and its metabolites by targeting the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase, which is required for the synthesis of purines and pyrimidines. 2,4-Pyrimidinediamine, 6-ethyl has been found to be cytotoxic against human tumor cell lines at concentrations of 10 μM but not against nonmalignant cells. The molecular modeling study suggests that this drug binds to a groove on the surface of the protein and blocks access to an important site for binding with other molecules.
