The reactions of 1-(5-phenylthiophen-2-yl)ethanone with acrylonitrile and polysulfide (S2) yielded an acrylonitrile polymer, which is soluble in various organic solvents. The polymerization was initiated by irradiation and the yield was improved by the addition of sulfur. The polymerization process was monitored by following the appearance of molecular ions in the mass spectrum. This reaction is also applicable to other types of monomers such as methyl ketones, chalcone, and bithienyl. This strategy has been applied for the synthesis of macrocyclic compounds with a dihydrochalcone unit.
