2-Pyridin-2-ylphenol is a macroscopic chiral ligand. It has a phenoxy functional group and can be used in the synthesis of organic compounds. 2-Pyridin-2-ylphenol is protonated in acidic conditions, which leads to the macroscopic chiral change from L to D. The ligand can coordinate with metals, such as copper, nickel, platinum, palladium and zinc, by donating electron density to the metal through its oxygen atoms. The coordination geometry of 2-pyridin-2-ylphenol is octahedral with six ligands around the metal ion. Molecular modeling studies have shown that 2-pyridin-2-ylphenol has a red shift in fluorescence emission when it binds to copper ions. Low efficiency for fluorescence emission may be due to steric hindrance from bulky substituents on phenoxy ring.
